The CPTers arrive at the beginning of July, and boy are they wacky! Jill Foster (2nd from left) and John Spragge (far right) both stayed at the camp all summer - Mark Frey (2nd from right) is the Chicago-based team support person.

In mid-July we travelled to Philadelphia for the MCC Anti-Racism Program annual gathering. No photos of the gathering, but we did get to spend a day on the New Jersey beach with our friend Mandy.

July 22-24 Karissa was in Sioux Falls for the MinnKota MCC Relief Sale. She also participated in a couple of Circle of One Book forums with Freeman/Sioux Falls Mennonite churches, and even sold some Defend Bear Butte t-shirts.

Edie Tschetter (MCC Central States Northern Tier) hosted Karissa in Freeman, and was sympathetic to her lonely state. Awww... Nice to know that I can be so easily replaced.

The Christian solidarity walk for Bear Butte. It's 110 degrees here, and there's no shade along the road. The man with the Sacred Sites/Human Rights sign has a backpack stuffed full of water and Gatorade to distribute.

Seventy-five of us walked, and another twenty-five rode because of the heat.

At the head of the walk, the rolling counter to tell us exactly how far Allen's bar is from Bear Butte.

At the entrance to the Gathering of Nations camp, the camp elders met us and formally welcomed us to the camp, then the young men escorted us in with singing and drumming. Bear Butte is in the background.

At the highway turnoff, the counter read less than 2 miles. By the time we'd walked back the dirt road to the camp, it ended at 12700 feet, or 2.4 miles. This is how far we walked, but since we walked two sides of a triangle, the actual crow-flies distance is right around 2 miles.

It wouldn't be a meyerloewen update without at least one Karissa sunset photo!
